about

Though this song was written long before his passing, it has taken on a new depth of meaning in the aftermath of my grandfather's passing during the fall of 2015. The lyrics, once abstract and philosophical, became very earthy to me during those days. The beauty of death was not without its sorrow, but cannot sorrow itself be beautiful? Does not a mournful song speak comfort to the heart? This song is about finding hope—yea, even life itself—in the death that surrounds us.

lyrics

I watched the leaves fall today;
Colours drifting by,
Drifting away.

How could death be such a beautiful thing?

I watched the sun fall last night;
Red and orange and purple
Bursting all across the sky.

How could death be such a beautiful thing?
How could death be such a beautiful thing?

I watched the rain fall into the sea;
Some might say it makes for a dreary day,
But it sure looks like going home to me.

How could death be such a beautiful thing?
How could death be such a beautiful thing?
How could death be such a beautiful thing?

'Cause when You gave Your life, You gave me mine;
And every new seed falls to the ground before it can rise;
So I'm not just waiting here till the day that I die
To come alive.

I watched a tear fall from Your cheek.
With arms outstretched and body broken you said,
"Won't you come and follow Me?"

How could death be such a beautiful thing?
How could death be such a beautiful thing?
How could death be such a beautiful thing?

I've been watching my world fall.
